Réflexions sur l'étude de la Fnege qui questionne le modèle du tout-recherche... (juillet 2017)

Une étude de la FNEGE sur le « business model » des écoles de commerce françaises pointe l’impasse dans laquelle vont bientôt se trouver certaines écoles qui n’ont ni l’attractivité ni les ressources de HEC Paris.

Cette étude résume des faits qui sont bien connus des acteurs, sans que ceux-ci n’aient, pour l’instant, la capacité à faire bouger le système…

Extrait: « Sous l’effet d’une globalisation croissante et du développement des accréditations, les écoles de commerce françaises, longtemps lieu d’un « savoir pratique », ont massivement investi dans la recherche. Au point de ressembler de plus en plus à des universités… »

Je n’ai jamais compris pourquoi l’université publique était présentée, en France, comme le haut lieu de la recherche…Alors que le manque d’incitation, l’absence d’objectifs (rattachés comme en Angleterre à l’allocation d’un budget) et de contrôle, ainsi que  le manque de moyens, en font un lieu où le nombre et la qualité des publications par chercheur sont certainement  inférieurs à celui des écoles de commerce (je me limite ici à la gestion), mais comme l’université prend grand soin de ne fournir aucune statistique à ce sujet, et que certains chercheurs de grande qualité ou prix Nobel représentent l’arbre qui cache la forêt, le flou persiste…

Le problème est néanmoins celui d’une substitution de la recherche du public vers le privé par les écoles de commerce (consulaires et de plus en plus privées ou sous statut associatif) alors que les diplômes afférents (doctorat, HDR) restent la quasi exclusivité de l’université publique…

Ce paradoxe est d’autant plus troublant que la vraie finalité des écoles de commerce (ESC) n’est effectivement pas la recherche, mais la formation des étudiants…

Extrait de l’étude: « Le sur-investissement académique est devenu le prix pour ne pas être déclassé sur un marché hyper-concurrentiel. Y compris pour les petites écoles qui n’en ont pas les moyens. Cette stratégie, qui pèse sur leurs ressources, est encore renforcée par le système de labels. Mais elles ne parviennent pas à s’en sortir. »

La recherche est dévoyée pour être remplacée par la publication comme fin en soi, car utilisée comme critère d’obtention de certaines accréditations. Or, il existe aussi des accréditations qui s’appuient davantage sur l’enseignement que sur les publications – sans doute moins prestigieuses que l’AACSB – elles sont snobées par les écoles de fin de tableau à qui elles correspondraient mieux!

Extrait de l’étude: « Ainsi, il faut reconsidérer la différence entre « teaching school » et « research school ». Certaines écoles, dont le cœur de métier est l’enseignement doivent pouvoir assumer cette stratégie comme un axe de différenciation. Cette dimension est d’ailleurs reconnue par une une accréditation comme l’AACSB… »

Si l’AACSB reconnaît la dimension professionalisante de la stratégie d’une école, cela n’est pas forcément le cas (où dans une moindre mesure) des accréditations nationales.

Le problème, non mentionné par l’étude, est celui de l’obtention du grade de Master – un label franco-français qui pourrait valoriser l’enseignement, mais qui, lui aussi porte au pinacle la publication…or avant d’obtenir l’accréditation AACSB, les écoles doivent d’abord obtenir cette reconnaissance du Ministère de l’Education…

Une école comme l’EMLV, qui vient d’obtenir le grade Master, n’a réussi à le faire qu’en embauchant des enseignants chercheurs à forte productivité en publications, comme toutes les autres…

Aujourd’hui, cette école se trouve à un tournant: un corps professoral permanent coupé en deux, d’un côté des enseignants-chercheurs à forte connotation pédagogique, dédiés aux étudiants, avec des cours en phase avec les besoins des entreprises et des taux de satisfaction de leur enseignement qui se situent autour de 90-100 % et un temps faible dédié à la recherche et de l’autre des enseignants chercheurs axés sur le « publish and perish »(1) et qui portent moins d’intérêt et de temps aux étudiants…

Un management « fin » du corps professoral permettrait peut-être de gérer de façon équitable ces deux blocs pour permettre à l’école de renforcer la dimension « teaching » tout en remplissant les critères des accréditations, mais cela suppose de s’interroger sur  le positionnement de l’école, d’effectuer un vrai travail sur sa différenciation et surtout de s’interroger sur l’obtention des accréditation de type AACSB en renforçant le volet enseignement plutôt que publications…

La facilité consisterait, par mimétisme, à  embaucher des chercheurs publiants, juste pour remplir les bonnes cases, à viser  les accréditations comme une stratégie en soi, sans s’interroger sur les effets à moyen terme de ces actions sur la qualité de l’enseignement et de la réputation de l’école, qui, en tant que post-bac, n’a pas des préparationnaires (2) captifs comme réservoir d’étudiants, mais s’appuie sur le bouche-à-oreille des diplômés…

La réponse dans les choix qui sont en train d’être faits se trouve dans la qualité managériale de l’encadrement, le niveau d’intelligence relationnelle et les qualités de leadership – or la qualité du management des ESC françaises, est aussi le volet qui manque à l’étude de la FNEGE…

L’avenir passe certainement, pour beaucoup d’ ESC, comme l’indique en filigrane l’étude, par des liens plus étroits avec les entreprises – mais pour cela, il faut une recherche avec de vraies implications managériales, donc un certain nombre d’enseignants-chercheurs pour qui l’entreprise ne soit pas qu’un concept, et qui soient capables de parler le même langage que les managers – ainsi qu’un management d’écoles de commerce qui, lui aussi, soit sur la même ligne managériale… Qui soit capable de définir une vraie stratégie dans un univers hyper-concurrentiel et de remettre en cause, au moins en partie, le mimétisme actuel et le poids trop lourd des accréditations…

 

(1) L’expression « publish or perish » (« publier ou périr » ) vise à dénoncer la pression exercée sur les enseignants-chercheurs pour atteindre des niveaux élevés de publications afin de recevoir des promotions.

(2) Etudiants issus de classes préparatoires préparant aux concours des écoles de commerce dites post-prepa par opposition à celles dites post-bac dont le concours d’entrée est ouvert aux bacheliers.
